When it comes to hair removal, there are so many options these days. Shaving, waxing, and laser hair removal are probably at the top of most people’s lists. Laser hair removal has grown steadily in popularity since the 90s when it started becoming readily available to the masses.
LASER is an acronym that stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. The concept of stimulated emission was created by Albert Einstein in 1917 but the first laser wasn’t created until 1960. Lasers work by an attraction to a specific chromophore. In the case of laser hair removal, the chromophore is melanin. The light energy is absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the hair, converting the light energy into heat which then damages the hair follicle, inhibiting further growth.
When starting on your permanent hair loss journey, it’s important to remember that not all lasers (or laser techs) are created equally. The market is flooded with companies trying to compete with the “big dogs” of aesthetic lasers. When speaking to different experts, you may get differing answers as to which laser they think is the best. I personally love the GentleMax Pro from Candela. Three wavelengths found as laser hair removal devices are Alexandrite (755 nm), Diode (810 nm) and Nd:YAG (1064nm). The only safe wavelength for darker skin (skin types 4-6) is the Nd:YAG. The GentleMax Pro combines both the Alexandrite and Nd:YAG in one machine giving the ability to safely and effectively treat all skin types which is why it is my go-to when it comes to laser hair removal.
Starting your hair loss journey and worried you don’t know where to start? I’ll highlight the major do’s and don’ts of laser hair removal in order to calm your nerves and help guide you through how to best prepare for your first laser hair removal treatment and to make all your bare skin dreams come true!
Do’s:
Consult with a professional: At-home laser hair removal just won’t give you the same results.
Follow pre-treatment care: Avoid sun exposure, certain medications (consult with your provider) and any harsh chemicals like acids and retinol.
Shave before your treatment: Arrive with freshly-shaved skin.
Apply numbing cream to sensitive areas: Consult with your provider on which areas are appropriate for numbing cream.
Avoid heat post-treatment: Stay away from workouts, hot showers, saunas, steam rooms or anything that will raise body temperature for at least 24 hours or until any irritation has subsided.
Make sure your clinic is using a reputable and safe machine: Not all lasers are created equally. Some may not be suitable for your skin type or may be less effective.
Don’ts:
Tan: Avoiding sun exposure is extremely important during your treatment to minimize the risk of hyper or hypopigmentation. Tan = Danger. Sunless tanning is also to be avoided for since it contains pigment that can cause burns on the skin. Sunless tanning would be safe between sessions as long as it is all gone before the next session.
Tweeze or wax: Removing hair from the root will minimize results because it will prevent the laser from finding the hair follicle.
Skip sessions: Consistency is key when it comes to seeing the best results from laser hair removal. Skipped sessions can mean needing more sessions long-term.
